I had not heard about gamification until this semester. Growing up I was never interested in playing video games nor would I have ever equate designing a learning environment on the educational properties of a digital game(s). Nonetheless, after viewing the Ted Talk presenters, Gabe Zichermann and Jane McGonigal, I am more intrigued in combining digital games and simulations that can be interactive and engaging learning tools for my students. Digital games are user centric, promote challenges, cooperation, and the ongoing process of problem-solving strategies.
Currently, my students play Sims, and MineCraft. However, as I attempted to research them, I was immediately restricted from the Sims site by the district. My students are not engaged by most math games available through the Chromebooks. I would like to use game-based learning/gamification to practice life skills math, review a math concept, or to teach survival skills, such as attitude, shelter, fire, water or food using a simulation or virtual games. I will continue to do more research as to what digital games are free and compatible to ChromeBooks.

I enjoyed the Ted Talks on gamification as well. There are so much benefits in game based learning than I thought. I glad you brought up a survival skill gamification. I am very interested in learning what have worked well for you. Although we have a swim unit in P.E., and digital game that provide learning in good attitude, water resources, and finding food would be great in P.E.

I, too, am interested in your idea of a survival game. Please share when you find a good one.

Diana, I wonder if your kids would like sumdog for math? As Gabe Zichermann said, this world is too slow for our kids today, they always want something faster and more thrilling. I like your idea of of using games to develop life, survival and attitude skills. Have you looked into Class Craft? check it out, maybe we can learn it together and have it ready to go for next year.

I wonder if they could develop a Math Game like the Movie Martian. You would have to use math and problem solving skills to survive. You bring up a great point about access to some of these games. How do we monitor and allow some games but not others.
