After viewing all the assigned videos, and reading the next three chapters in The Flat World and Education I am more inspired to change my “ traditional” model of teaching. I have been taught not to think outside the box since I can remember. Even though I had amazing teachers during high school, I was not expected to questioned or challenge a teacher’s lesson. However, after reflecting on the videos and reading I have come to the conclusion that I do not want to prepare students within a “factory” model. I want to expand my horizons, and promote more interactive projects, interest-based learning and life skills using digital media and technology in my classroom. After all, education is for the new generation those who will find a solution to real-life problems, use technology to communicate more effectively and create the changes that the older generation cannot even dream about. My goal is to implement technology in ways that will keep my students engaged and motivated to learn, even if is only one subject area at a time. Where do we begin in making the changes to elevate our education reform to reflect Finland’s educational model.

I also felt inspired to integrate more technology! This year we are supposed to get Chromebooks for all our students in 4th grade which is very exciting! However, one of my challenges is not knowing how to incorporate lessons using technology in a meaningful, purposeful way. This is one of the areas I definitely need more professional development on. Have you thought about any specific projects you want to work on?

If you want students to question and push back on you or on the lesson, how can you create a safe space in which they can do that? Are you ready for that? It could be incredibly exciting and juicy!

I am excited and nervous. I want students to question and challenge, but sometimes feel that as a new teacher I my not have enough experience yet. Answering all their questions and knowing how to channel all their curiosity to the right outlet, quite frankly, scares me but I'm ready to dive in!

I am also excited about finding new ways to integrate technology throughout the curriculum. Most of the technology used in the classrooms is for a certain program that all students most complete. I am looking forward to letting students have more choice when it comes to using technology.
